Art Therapy

Pelican Arts offers one-to-one art therapy with art therapists who have professional registration with The Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA). Consultations usually run for one hour and are tailored for people of all ages and abilities.

In art therapy, people can use art materials, images, and conversation to help them express themselves and understand what is happening in their lives. Using art materials stimulates many parts of the brain, assisting a person in thinking differently. It can be a great tool for solving problems, recognising strengths, and changing perspectives. Being creative and making art in a supportive and understanding environment also strengthens connections between the mind and the body, helping to integrate experiences in the physical world with those in our minds.

Art materials and processes are often used by art therapists to enhance the impact of other psychological strategies used in conventional talk therapy, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

An Individual art therapy session involves talking and making art.

You do not need to have experience or skills in the arts to benefit from art therapy. The aim of art therapy is to address difficulties you may be experiencing in a supportive, confidential space.

Consultations usually begin with a brief account of your current issues. The art therapist will then suggest an appropriate art activity. Sessions include a discussion of the art-making process, how you felt and what it means to you. Sometimes the therapist will give you homework do between sessions.
